Whenever I’m in a room of commercial women, somehow the conversations always turns to girls ruling the arena.
We seriously focus on how a women’s business and management style might impact the process world events. In some unspecified time in the future the conversations wanes and all of us stop talking about it or simply laugh it off as though something like that would never happen and if it does – we won’t be around to look it.
But it seems like we can have been wrong. I received a complicated copy of a really interesting book a few month ago called The Athena Doctrine: How Women (and the boys Who Think Like Them) Will Rule the long run by John Gerzema ( @johngerzema ) and Michael D’Antonio.
This is a kind of books where a few skilled researchers and writers party, do an enormous research project after which write a book in regards to the results. Personally, i admire these kind of books. Maybe it’s because I actually have a research background, but hate reading dry reports or even, therefore, i’m able to actually start visualizing myself ruling the sector.
In either case, i believe BOTH ladies and men will enjoy reading this book and seeing how our worldwide culture is shifting right into a new set of valued characteristics and behaviors.
But First…The Numbers
The book begins with a summary of a few numbers. I’m going to share these with you because once you notice them – you’ll wish to see and understand more of what’s behind them.
A little bit concerning the numbers and where they arrive from, in order that you don’t think it is a skewed or small population – 64,000 people (males and females) were surveyed across thirteen nations. What’s interesting is that the authors have included a number of cultures; Western, Eastern, Middle Eastern – and several other in between to get to those numbers:
- 86% agree that there’s an excessive amount of power within the hands of huge institutions and firms.
- 76% disagree that their country cares about it citizens greater than it used to.
- 74% disagree that the realm is becoming more fair.
- 51% disagree that life might be better for his or her children.
These are only the massive numbers. What gets really interesting is in case you see that it isn’t just women answering – it’s men. And overall, the craze is consistent worldwide.
A Change is Coming
The authors agree that a shift is unquestionably underway internationally toward characteristics that experience traditionally (and this can be a key word) been perceived as feminine. That’s to not say that men don’t have these characteristics – it’s to assert that humans perceive these characteristics as being feminine.
The study also showed that those organizations and countries who espouse these characteristics had been more “successful” more “happy.”
Who Are These Brave Authors
I say that these authors are brave slightly tongue-in-cheek. All they did was do a survey and report the effects. But portion of me thinks that if this book got any wide acclaim – that it’d start a global riot – if not a couple of heated debates among spouses and co-workers.
John Gerzema is a pioneer in using data to spot social change and help companies adapt to new demands. You’ve seen his work before; namely the books The Brand Bubble and Spend Shift. Michael D’Antonio is the Pulitzer Prize winning author and co-author of Spend Shift.
As you will see that, they’ve written several books that describe shifts and changes in our culture that can make an impact on how we do business.
Is This a Book Worth Reading Are You Kidding
I suppose you are able to say that if I took the time to read and inform you about this book – IN FACT – it’s worth reading.
More than that, i believe The Athena Doctrine contains relevant, important research data that each one folks should incorporate into our future strategic planning and particularly our future hiring decisions. This book will let you know what attributes to seem for as you begin building a team and what traits your customers will value most.
